Motorradreisen auf der Fahrt

Stage 1 of our motorcycle tour: The north of Europe to Dakar, approx. 4200km

We cross the countries:

1. Spanien

2. Marokko

3. Westsahara

4. Mauretanien

5. Senegal

We meet at the southernmost point of Spain, Algeciras. After picking up our motorcycles or arriving directly from home in Tarifa on our own bikes, we set off on our adventure. We take the ferry from Tarifa to Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city on the north coast of the African continent. We cross Morocco heading south, the route takes us along the Moroccan coast with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. We drive through varied landscapes, from flat coastal plains up into the high Atlas where we cross the Tizi n`Test pass at 2093m.

Along the Atlantic coast and through picturesque fishing villages, the route leads via Tan-Tan to the border with Western Sahara and to El Aaiun, the largest city in Western Sahara with a population of 218,000. We continue through a barren but fascinating desert landscape with breathtaking views of the Atlantic. After leaving Western Sahara, the route takes us through a varied desert landscape, from sandy plains to rocky areas, until we finally reach the economic center of Mauritania, Nouadhibou.

We now drive through Nuakshot, the capital of Mauritania, and admire the Moorish desert with its spectacular views of seemingly endless sand dunes. Today we cross the border into Senegal and continue our motorcycle tour via St. Louis, a charming colonial city where the Senegal flows into the Atlantic. Now we ride through the Sahel, a transitional region between the Sahara desert in the north and the dry savannah in the south. We reach Dakar, the city that gave its name to the most legendary rally of all.

Stage 2 of our motorcycle adventure: From the edge of the Sahara to Benin in the jungle, approx. 3900km

Countries to be crossed:

  1. Guinea
  2. Elfenbeinküste
  3. Ghana
  4. Togo
  5. Benin
  6. Nigeria

We continue on dusty tracks that take us through picturesque villages and open savannah landscapes. From Koungheul, the route takes us deeper inland and we cross wide grasslands and dense forests. The tracks become increasingly challenging, putting our off-road driving skills and our bikes to the test. We cross the border into Guinea and reach Koundara. The landscape changes again as we continue towards Mamou. As we make our way through dense bushland, the open parts of the route offer breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and mountains.

We drive through traditional villages, where we gain an insight into the everyday life of the local tribes. Finally we reach Kankan, a historic city with an eventful past and the third largest city in Guinea with a population of 191,000. A challenging stretch of road leads us towards Sopota. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and desert-like again. As we ride through sand dunes and rocky terrain, we can perceive the transitions between different ecosystems and enjoy the vastness of the breathtaking landscape to the full. We finally reach Sopota, a remote oasis. We cross the border to the Ivory Coast, which got its name from the lively trade in ivory, the tusks of elephants. Our motorcycle expedition takes us on to Man and Gagnoa. We ride along winding roads through lush rainforests and dense vegetation. On sandy paths through mangrove forests, we ride along the coastal regions of the Ivory Coast and again have views of the ocean. We cross the border into Ghana and continue our tour to Cape Coast. We drive along the picturesque Ghanaian coast, past beaches and fishing villages. We continue to Togo, which is known for the largest voodoo market in the world, the Marché au Féticheurs (Fetish Market).

Here the route becomes more challenging again as we drive through hilly terrain and dense rainforests. From Lome, the capital of Togo, we cross the border into Benin, the cradle of the Voodoo religion. We continue on to the capital, Porto-Novo, where the seat of the country's National Assembly is located. On the last day of the second stage, we cross the border into Nigeria. In Nigeria, which is known for its high crime rate in southern Africa, the route takes us through varied landscapes, including dense rainforests, sandy plains and busy urban areas. Once in Lagos we will have time to check, repair or replace our bikes and equipment. We will also find new tires for the bikes and spare parts of all kinds here.

Etappe 3 unserer Endurotour: Das Kongobecken, ca. 3800km

Folgende Länder werden wir durchqueren:

  1. Nigeria
  2. Kamerun
  3. Gabun
  4. Kongo
  5. Demokratische Republik Kongo
  6. Angola

This is probably where the most exciting part of our enduro expedition through an unknown area with chaotic road conditions begins. We leave the lively metropolis of Lagos in Nigeria and ride through varied landscapes, fertile farmland, dense rainforests and picturesque riverbanks towards Ugep, where we then cross the border into authoritarian Cameroon. We continue along the coast of Cameroon, with views of the turquoise blue sea and golden beaches, until we reach Kribi. On bumpy roads and through dense rainforests, we experience new scenic surprises around every bend and finally reach Ebolowa. We enter Gabon and continue our journey to Oyem. We cross Gabon, which is known for its vast, protected parks and natural landscapes, on unpaved roads via Kango, Mouila and Dolisie, where we will have crossed the border into the Republic of Congo.

From Dolisie we continue to Brazzaville, directly on the Congo River, where we cross another border, this time to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We cross the Congo River, which gives its name to both the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We arrive in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the third largest metropolitan region in Africa with 17 million inhabitants. Our motorcycle adventure continues from Kinshasa through hilly terrain and picturesque rural areas via Inkisi to Angola. We continue our motorcycle tour through beautiful coastal landscapes, past secluded beaches and fishing villages until we reach Luanda, the capital of Angola. We have reached the end of the third stage and can explore Luanda, the vibrant city by the sea with its colonial architecture, cultural sights and lively nightlife.

Stage 4 of our enduro tour: The south, challenge and vacation in the Adventure Cocktail, approx. 4100km

Zu durchquerende Länder:

  1. Angola
  2. Namibia
  3. Südafrika

The last stage of this enduro tour now takes us from Luanda, with its fascinating mix of African and Portuguese culture, along a spectacular coastal road towards Lobito, a charming harbor town with its white sandy beaches and beautiful cafés. The journey continues into the highlands of Angola with its green hills and fascinating rock formations. In Lubango we visit the “Tundavala Gap”, a breathtaking viewpoint belonging to the Serra da LEba, from where we have a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. The next day we head to the Angolan-Namibian border where we experience the impressive beauty of the Angolan savannah en route. After crossing the border, we reach Namibia and stop near the Etosha National Park. We take time for a game drive in the park, one of the most famous game reserves in Africa, and observe elephants, giraffes, lions and many other animal species in their natural environment. We then continue to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Windhoek offers a great mix of African and German culture and we have a very European street scene here.

Now the vacation begins and we continue our tour to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. This national park is home to some of the most beautiful desert landscapes in the world, including the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei.

We now leave the desert and continue our motorcycle tour via Keetmanshoop with its granite formations to Neilersdrift in South Africa. Today we finally cross the last border of this journey. This region is known for its picturesque landscapes along the Orange River. After leaving the river landscapes behind us, we drive to the Swartberg Mountains.

At the end of this journey, we finally reach the southernmost point of Africa at Cape Agulhas. This is where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean meet and we enjoy the breathtaking view and celebrate with champagne that we have dared to undertake this expedition and passed its tests. The last few kilometers take us to Cape Town, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, where we park our motorcycles in a campground to have them shipped back to Europe. Now the return flight to Europe awaits us after we have explored Cape Town, and this exciting motorcycle expedition tour comes to an end.

Closing words on the expedition:
We are proud to say that last year's Trans-Africa expedition was a success. Are you ready for Transafrica 2024/2025?

  • Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt, despite the closed borders in Ethiopia and Sudan! With a quarter of a century of travel expedition and border training experience, I can wholeheartedly say that it was a challenging adventure of superlatives. This East Route adventure is history! The “stones” that are put in our way are insurmountable, so we open a new chapter and start the greatest African adventure!
  • THE TRANSAFRIKA West Expedition! The long arduous journey is to be understood exclusively as a FIRST TRIP! This trip is NOT a package deal but is offered as a EXPEDITION booked by you with all the advantages and disadvantages!
  • This adventure is only suitable for men who feel fit and able to master thousands of kilometers full of surprises and plan B routes with the travel enduro! The destination is Cape Town, but before you book you must be aware that it is possible that you will not reach this destination and that the expedition could be terminated on the way to the destination for political/environmental or time reasons! This means that you only book the start of the expedition with no guarantee of reaching the destination! Because safety first is the first commandment on such an adventure

This expedition involves the journey as a DESTINATION and not the destination as a journey.

We expressly point out to all participants that this expedition is NOT an all-inclusive motorcycle tour and that kilometers and countries will be adjusted according to the course of the expedition. Start is South Europe Destination is South Africa, everything in between is the adventure expedition which will ALWAYS be adapted according to the given conditions. We have been running the Trans-Africa expeditions since 2016 and, due to the “package travel law” in Germany, we expressly point out that, like all OVERCROSS expeditions, this is “only” the intention (and not a guarantee) to reach the destination.

All participants will receive the actual planned expedition itinerary at the pre-meeting of the Trans-Africa Expedition including all information and knowledge we have gathered in the last ten years of expedition experience. This tour is aimed at endurists who see the adventure with all its impassibilities as a challenge to reach the goal together. One for ALL one for one is the motto of this adventure trip through Africa!

Motorrad und endureisende werden in Afrika immer freudig begrüßt, hier ein Mann aus malawi
Motorcyclists and travelers are always greeted with joy in Africa, here a man from Malawi

This motorcycle expedition, like every expedition, is more or less a first trip, some of which has already been scouted by Georg Winterberger.
