Itinerary of the motorbike tour along the Pamir Highway:
Day 1: Arrival in Osh - Kyrgyzstan
After our flight, we land in Osh, the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan. We are picked up and can rest for a few hours in our hotel. After lunch, we familiarise ourselves with the motorbikes on a short tour outside the city. We spend the night in Osh.
Day 2: Day trip to Lake Papan with pass ride
Today's day trip (approx. 150 kilometres) first takes us to Lake Papan, the water reservoir of Osh. We cycle on unsurfaced gravel tracks through a green valley and then over one of the many passes south of the city. In the afternoon, we return to Osh on a well-maintained road.
Day 3: Drive through the Kyrgyz Fergana Valley to Khujand in Tajikistan
Today's journey is long and dusty. However, we are rewarded with many new, unfamiliar impressions that make us forget all our efforts. The beer in the evening in our beautiful hotel tastes all the better.
Day 4 : Drive to Lake Iskender
We leave the agricultural Fergana Valley and cross the first major pass on a good road. This takes us through a deep, wild gorge to the turn-off to Lake Iskender. We reduce our speed on the dirt road in order to reach the lake safely via the hairpin bends. We spend the night right next to the turquoise-blue lake.
Day 5: Pass journey to Dushanbe
While our support vehicle drives through the dreaded Anzob tunnel on the way to Dushanbe, we cross a pass over 3,000 metres high. As all the traffic passes through the dark and wet tunnel, we have the imposing pass all to ourselves. We spend the night in Dushanbe.
Day 6: To Kalaikum, the starting point of the Pamirs
There are two ways to get to Kalaikum: Either on the winter route in the south of Tajikistan or on the M41 across the mountains, over bumpy roads that are sometimes interrupted by watercourses. If possible, we choose the second, more challenging but all the more attractive route. We spend the night in a homestay. This gives us the opportunity to gain an insight into the everyday life of a Tajik family and to enjoy their generous hospitality.
Day 7: Drive to Khorog
The mighty Pansch River accompanies us to Khorog. The river and road wind their way through a fascinating rocky gorge. On the other side of the river, almost every green spot is used as a site for an Afghan village. Khorog, a university town in the middle of the Pamirs, offers us a cosy hotel and a good dinner.
Day 8: Onward journey to Bibi Fatima
Our onward journey takes us through the Wakhan Valley, along the border with Afghanistan to Bibi Fatima. The Wakhan Valley is inhabited by a distinct ethnic group. These people differ from the Tajiks not only in their own language, but also externally and culturally. In Bibi Fatima we have a marvellous view over the Wakhan Valley. Of course, we also make use of the hot spring, which is idyllically situated in a rock tomb and invites you to take a marvellous bath with water at over 40 degrees. We spend the night in Bibi Fatima.
Day 9: Drive to the Pamir plateau at an altitude of 4,000 metres
On the journey to the Pamir plateau, the air becomes thinner and thinner, but the view is all the clearer. Apart from wild camels, yaks and a few shepherds, we find ourselves alone in this remote area. We spend the night in a homestay by Lake Bulunkul and have time to visit hot springs and a ‘mini geyser’.
Day 10: On the Pamir Highway
We are now on the legendary Pamir Highway or M41. The road was built by the Soviets along the Afghan and Chinese border. Today it is still partly used by Chinese transport vehicles. We cross four passes with an altitude of over 4,000 metres. The Ak-Baital Pass, at 4,655 metres, is the highest of these. In Murgab, a former coal mining town, we spend the night in a hotel and, apart from the hot springs, are able to take a shower for the first time in days.
Day 11: To Lake Karakul and over the Kyzyl Art Pass to Kyrgyzstan
Our onward journey takes us to the beautifully situated Lake Karakul. We spend the night in Karakul right by the lake. The next day we cross our last pass, the Kyzyl-Art at an altitude of 4,200 metres. Here we reach the border with Kyrgyzstan.
Day 12: Lenin Peak base camp, return journey to Osh
Before heading back to Osh, we make a detour to the base camp of Lenin Peak at an altitude of over 3,500 metres and enjoy a fantastic view of this mountain giant in good weather.
Day 13: Conclusion of the round trip
The last 250 kilometres show us a completely different scenery compared to the impressive Pamir Mountains. Colourful rocks and changing vegetation merge in a wonderful way. We return in the evening...
Day 14: Osh
The last day of our Pamir tour belongs to the city of Osh. We have enough time for a city tour or a visit to the bazaar.
Requirements:
- Readiness for an extraordinary journey with possible surprises
- Good motorbike riding technique
- Respect for foreign people and cultures
