Itinerary of the Kenya motorbike tour
Day 0: Arrival
Departure in Europe. You get on the plane and fly towards your adventure. We will be happy to help you book your flights.
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Karibu, welcome! You will be picked up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, named after Kenya's first post-independence president. You will immediately experience the hectic city life of Nairobi, full of traffic and people on the move. The city of Nairobi has a population of around 5 million, which increases to 10 million if you include the suburbs. The city is named after the Nairobi River and is situated at an altitude of 1800 metres, making the temperature very pleasant in the summer months and even quite cool at night. The city was officially founded in 1899 with the arrival of the railways. Today's programme depends on whether you arrive in the morning or late afternoon/evening.
Day 2: Nairobi - Mount Kenya Gate (approx. 210 km)
We get up early to leave the city: We head north, quickly leaving the main roads and following country roads that pass through small towns. The roads will consist mainly of tarmac and some gravel. We quickly leave construction work, buildings and traffic jams behind us and welcome village life, nature and lush hills. We pass the Aberdare National Park and drive to Mount Kenya. Its highest peak is 5199 metres high. It was designated as an Unecso Biosphere Reserve in 1978. The mountain plays an important role in the culture of the ethnic groups living there, such as the Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu and Maasai. We will spend the night in simple accommodation at the foot of the mountain.
Day 3: Mount Kenya Gate - Marigat (approx. 220 km)
Today we will see a lot on gravel. We ride through grasslands, past game farms, several game reserves and will see unique wildlife. Watch out for possible zebra crossings! But also watch out for the cattle.
As this is a remote area, we need to make sure we have enough snacks and drinks with us, and we will prepare for a simple picnic en route. Our destination today is close to Lake Baringo, a birdwatcher's paradise whose fresh water is an oasis in the dry steppe. This is the traditional home of the Njemps tribe, a unique people who are the only pastoralists who also fish.
Our accommodation is located in a small trading town near the lake.
Day 4: Marigat - Molo (approx. 180 km)
Today we slalom our way through western Kenya. We ride on a mixture of tarmac and gravel roads, past villages and towns in the countryside. Some sections we will ride without our support vehicle and take the mechanic on the tour leader's motorbike. While we start in the morning at an altitude of around 1500 metres, we will sleep at 2500 metres. So pack your jumper!
Day 5: Molo - Maasai Mara (approx. 200 km)
Today is another adventurous day. We will bypass the main road heading south and explore tracks and trails used only by the Maasai and wildlife. Again there will be a track where we will move away from the support vehicle. You will notice that the landscape changes to dry hills and there is less human activity. However, there is now more wildlife along the way. We will spend the night in a nice camp close to the national park.
Day 6: Safari by car in the Maasai Mara
No people are allowed to live in a national park. It is barely fenced in. Apparently this is enough for a rich animal life. The landscape in the Maasai Mara is marvellous. We leave the motorbikes at rest for a while and go on an optional safari by car where we encounter large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope. Giraffes and lions cross or walk along the road. We can drive around this magnificent Kenyan game park until late at night. There is also an option for a motorbike safari! Take enough batteries and memory cards for your camera, because it's really beautiful. A real safari experience!
**Note: The safari can be optionally booked on site.
Day 7: Maasai Mara - Lake Naivasha (approx. 225 km)
We set off early to spin the wheels of our motorbikes again. In the morning there is a lot of game along the road. We follow a long gravel track until we reach the tarmac to Narok. Then we are back in green country, green highlands. We make our way to Lake Naivasha. The lake and its surroundings are rich in natural resources, and the fertile soil and water supply have made this area one of the best agricultural regions in Kenya. There are many (Dutch) flower farmers here. We spend the night by the lake.
Day 8: Naivasha - Nairobi (approx. 150 km)
Our last day, but not the last. We start with an optional boat ride, enjoy the bird life and visit hypo-pool. Then we start the engines again. We will drive a mixture of tarmac, spectacular tracks and dirt roads towards Nairobi. We pass the Mount Suswa Conservancy and drive through the Ngong Hills Natural Reserve. The closer we get to Nairobi, the busier it gets. Air pollution, traffic jams, tall buildings and people on the move. On arrival in Nairobi, we have a well-earned drink to celebrate and share our memories.
Day 9: Mount Kenya - Machakos
Depending on the time of your flight, you either have to leave very early for the airport or have the day to explore Nairobi: the Maasai market, Nairobi National Park, one of the large shopping centres or simply to relax in your hotel. But then it's time to say goodbye.
The country and its people are perfect for extending your trip to the Kenyan coast or other adventures. From relaxing on the beach to mountain climbing, everything is possible in Kenya and its neighbouring countries!
We wish everyone flying home a pleasant and safe journey home and hope to have you on board again soon on one of our adventures!
